  • A New Green Packaging Option: Washi Tape Solve the Packaging Waste Problem with Its Environmental Advantages
    Sep 11, 2025
With the booming development of e-commerce logistics and brick-and-mortar retail, the problem of plastic waste generated in the packaging process has become increasingly prominent. Traditional plastic tape, due to its difficulty in biodegradation and recycling, has become a key target for environmental management. Today, washi tape, which combines adhesiveness with eco-friendliness, is rapidly gaining popularity in the packaging industry due to its significant environmental advantages, providing a practical solution for promoting the green transformation of the packaging industry. Unlike traditional plastic tape, which uses petroleum-based materials such as polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride as its base material, washi tape's core advantage lies in its natural, environmentally friendly raw materials. Its base material, "washi," is primarily made from the bast of natural plants such as paper mulberry, mulberry, and gooseberry, processed using traditional techniques and is naturally biodegradable. Experimental data shows that discarded pure washi tape decomposes into organic matter in just 3-6 months in the natural environment, leaving no residual pollution. Even if it ends up in a landfill, it does not occupy land resources for a long time like plastic tape does, and it also avoids the generation of harmful gases from incineration. At the same time, the adhesives used in compliant washi tapes are mostly made of natural rubber or plant starch, and do not contain harmful ingredients such as formaldehyde and heavy metals. When packaging food, maternal and child products, etc., they can effectively avoid the risk of chemical migration and take into account both environmental protection and safety. Waterproof washi tape has become a key choice for e-commerce logistics and packaging companies practicing "green logistics." A leading domestic e-commerce platform implemented a "Green Packaging Plan" in early 2023, replacing all tape used for packaging fresh produce and daily necessities with washi tape. In just one year, the plan reduced plastic use by over 350 tons and increased the biodegradability rate of packaging waste to 92%. "Before, plastic tape had to be thrown in the trash after unpacking. Now with washi tape, we simply unwrap the packaging and throw it into the recycling bin along with the carton. It's both convenient and environmentally friendly," said the platform's logistics manager. Consumer satisfaction with washi tape packaging has reached 89%, with many users stating that "washi tape makes unpacking more comfortable, without the sticky feeling of plastic residue." For packaging large items like appliances and furniture, some e-commerce platforms have introduced extra-wide washi tape. With its superior tensile strength, extra-wide washi tape effectively secures heavy items, replacing traditional plastic and tape combinations and further reducing plastic use. Washi tape has also become an eco-friendly vehicle for conveying brand value in branded gift boxes and high-end retail packaging. A beauty chain replaced the sealing tape on gift boxes with off-white washi tape printed with the brand's logo. The natural texture of the paper complements the paper material of the gift boxes, enhancing the product's premium feel. A luxury brand also launched customized washi tape, printed with the brand's logo using plant-based dyes. This not only resolves the inconsistency between plastic tape and the gift box design, but also attracts a large number of environmentally conscious young consumers by promoting "biodegradable" packaging. Sales of this type of product increased by 18% year-on-year. Washi tape's rich colors and removable nature are also popular for cultural and creative products and handmade gift packaging. Many cultural and creative stores have introduced a simple "washi tape + kraft paper" packaging combination, making the gift packaging completely biodegradable or recyclable after opening, highlighting the product's environmentally friendly nature. Beyond e-commerce logistics, washi tape is also becoming increasingly popular in offline retail and branded packaging. A beauty chain replaced the sealing tape on gift boxes with washi tape printed with the brand's logo. This initiative not only enhances the quality of gift boxes by leveraging the natural texture of washi paper, but also attracts a large number of environmentally conscious young consumers with its "biodegradable packaging" selling point. Sales of related products increased by 18% year-on-year. For cold chain packaging of fresh fruits and vegetables, some companies are using specialized washi tape with a waterproof coating. This not only meets the need for moisture resistance but also avoids the recycling difficulties of traditional waterproof plastic tape, achieving a balance between functionality and environmental sustainability. From an industry perspective, the promotion of customized kawaii washi tape also helps improve the quality and efficiency of packaging waste recycling systems. Traditional plastic tape, applied to cartons, requires additional degumming during the recycling process, increasing recycling costs and reducing the quality of the recycled paper. However, washi tape can be incorporated into the pulping process along with the cartons, eliminating the need for separate separation, significantly improving the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of waste paper recycling. It is estimated that cartons treated with washi tape have a recycling rate approximately 15% higher than those treated with plastic tape, saving approximately 80 kilograms of chemicals per ton of recycled waste paper. Although washi tape is currently slightly more expensive than regular plastic tape, its cost is gradually decreasing with increased production and technological advancements. Furthermore, many local governments have included washi tape in their "Green Packaging Material Promotion Catalogue" and provide subsidies to businesses using washi tape, further promoting its widespread adoption. Industry insiders said that in the next 3-5 years, the penetration rate of washi tape in the packaging field is expected to exceed 40%, becoming a mainstream product to replace traditional plastic tape, providing important support for reducing "white pollution" in the packaging field and achieving the "dual low-carbon" goals.
